Recognize the Signs. Respond with confidence.

Mental health challenges are common — and knowing how to respond when someone is struggling can make a meaningful difference. Mental Health First Aid helps everyday people recognize warning signs, respond with compassion, and connect individuals to the help they need.

At the Macoupin County Public Health Department, we support community well-being by promoting awareness, education, and access to Mental Health First Aid resources that empower people to support one another safely and effectively.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based approach that teaches people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health or substance use challenges. Just like traditional first aid helps you assist someone with a physical injury, Mental Health First Aid helps you support someone experiencing emotional distress or a mental health crisis until professional help is available.  It focuses on:

•    Recognizing warning signs
•    Responding calmly and respectfully
•    Providing initial support
•    Connecting people with professional care

Who Should Learn Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is valuable for anyone who interacts with others — especially:
•    Parents and caregivers
•    Teachers and school staff
•    Healthcare and social service workers
•    Employers and workplace leaders
•    First responders
•    Faith and community leaders
•    Coaches and youth mentors
•    Friends and family members

Support Starts with Awareness

You don’t have to be a professional or need any clinical background to make a difference. Learning how to respond to mental health concerns helps create a community where people feel seen, supported, and connected to care.
